The desk in St Louis: +1 (314) 862-4517

all twenty-five, the request on the left and the trip we will book on the right

Reserve a vacation package from a St Louis booking desk, listed under the request it answers

Every trip here is one you can reserve. They are listed under the popular request each one answers, because that is how people arrive: with a place already in mind. Where this desk will not book the thing you named, it says so and hands back the trip it would place instead.

A break in a long drystone wall on a bare upland, the moor and distant blue hills visible through the gap, soft overcast

This is the whole catalogue, and the way to reserve a vacation package from a St Louis booking desk is to find the wish you arrived with in the left hand column. A desk organised sensibly would sort its trips by price. This one sorts them by refusal.

A trip planning service in St Louis that organized itself sensibly would put its twenty-five trips on a page and sort them by price. We put the refusals first instead. The reason is not cleverness. It is that almost nobody arrives here with a blank sheet. People arrive holding a picture, and the picture usually has a name: a white town above a blue sea in July, a coast road in Campania, six nights on a river with the meals included. The name is the thing we have to talk about first, because until we do, everything we offer sounds like evasion.

So the catalogue is entered through the twenty-five names. Each one gets a page, and each page does two things in order. It says plainly what is good about the wish, because these places are famous for reasons and the reasons are real. Then it says what we know about the wish that made us stop arranging it, and what we would put in its place, with dates, a starting figure per person, and the name of the company that would actually run it once you asked.

This costs us money and it is worth saying how. A desk that says yes to the twenty-five most requested things in American leisure travel converts a far higher share of the people who walk in. We lose those people. Some leave politely and book the famous thing elsewhere, which is a perfectly reasonable outcome and we tell them so. We also lose the bulk incentives that go to offices moving large numbers of the same product, since our twenty-five substitutes are scattered across twenty-five different operating companies and no single one of them sees enough business from us to matter. What we get back is a smaller number of trips that come back happy, and referrals from people who were told the truth at the counter. That trade is the whole business model and we would rather you knew it before you read a single page.

The twenty-five trips you can reserve

Every trip below is open to reserve today. The square counts how close it sits to the request it answers: four sides is the same wish at a different address, one side is a different kind of trip altogether.

Two different reasons a wish gets turned down

The first reason is arithmetic, and it belongs to the place rather than to you. A town of thirteen thousand residents that receives two million visitors between June and September is not failing at anything, it is simply full. The heat is measured, the ferry queues are measured, the price of a room in the second week of July is measured, and none of those numbers care how well a trip is arranged. When a wish falls into this group we are not saying the place is unworthy. We are saying that the version of it in your head existed, and that it existed in a month or a decade that is not the one you would be buying. Where a shoulder season fixes it, we say so on the page and offer the same place in a different week. Where nothing fixes it, we offer somewhere with the same shape and a tenth of the crowd.

The second reason is about us, and it is less flattering. Some wishes are refused because this office cannot arrange them well enough to be worth your money. A fourteen day rail circuit through three countries with tight connections needs a desk that rebooks at two in the morning when the first train goes wrong, and that is not what we are. Long distance expedition sailing, anything requiring medical clearance, and multi generation group travel above roughly twenty people all fall here too. We hold no opinions worth reading about these trips and we grade nothing, so there is no ranking hiding behind the refusal. There is just a limit, and pretending otherwise would cost you more than reading it does. If your wish is in this group, the page names an operating company that does it properly and does not ask you to come back to us.

happy to arrange, no argument

a single country, two or three bases, ten to eighteen nights, shoulder season

walking a marked route in a country where the route is not the point

a city with rain in it, four nights, museums booked in advance

a return to somewhere you have already been, with the same rooms

travel around a fixed event: a wedding, a race, a family date on a calendar you do not control

one long stay in one place, four weeks or more, with a kitchen

None of the six above needs a substitute page. Ask for any of them by name and we will start pricing it the same day. The twenty-five pages exist because the twenty-five requests behind them arrive here constantly, not because refusal is our default posture.

What happens after you pick one

Nothing on this site takes a payment and nothing here asks for a card. Willow Mile Press Bookings LLC places your reservation with the company that operates the trip, that company invoices you directly under its own terms, and we are paid a commission by it after you are home. You will see the operator named before you agree to anything, and its cancellation terms sit alongside ours at the page on cancelling. The order of events is set out at the page that sets out the steps, and the questions people actually ask before they commit are answered at the awkward questions.

This office keeps no counter hours and publishes none, because a printed opening time would be a promise about a person rather than about the work. What is promised instead is a deadline: every request that reaches the form is read in the order it arrived and answered within one business day, and if the answer needs longer than that you will get a note saying so and what it is waiting on.

Figures on the substitute pages run from $1,500 to $5,070 per person and are starting points against a season, not an offer against your dates. Send us the dates and we will replace them with real numbers: within one business day for a first human response, two to four working days for a written figure. If you would rather skip the twenty-five pages entirely and describe the trip in your own words, use the page for asking a figure. If you have already found the one you want and only need to see what we would swap it for, all twenty-five swaps, request by request lists all twenty-five side by side.

We do not advise on visas, entry documents or travel insurance, and we will not comment on medical fitness for a trip. Those are matters for the relevant authority, an insurer, or your own doctor, and our page on them says so at more length. The office holds no opinions for hire and issues no grades or scores. What it does is take a request, find the company that runs the thing properly, and put your name on it.

Ask the desk to reserve something

This form is open 24/7 and takes booking requests at any hour. It asks for no card number and no payment, because nothing is ever paid to this office. Requests are read in the order they arrive and answered within one business day.

No card number is asked for on this page or held anywhere by this office, and sending this costs nothing and commits you to nothing. A request is not a reservation: nothing is held in your name until the operating company confirms it in writing and you have read its terms.
